Good News For Parents: Believe it or not, this can actually help you achieve more in 2012

By Donovan Grant

If you’ve identified something in your life you want to change then just do it!

Can new year resolutions really be that simple?

“Just do it!”

It can be that simple. Not necessarily easy, but it can be simple.

We all know that this is the time of year for fresh starts, realignment and new beginnings. We also so know that some people, in fact I won’t gentle here most people will quit on the goal before the calendar switches over to February.

How do we know this?

Well it doesn’t take a crystal ball; we don’t need to read daily horoscopes and we don’t need to see a signed contract. History has shown that at least 80% of people who start January 1st with good intentions for some reason lose their way long before the month end? There might be a scientific reason for this, but all I know is that it happens every year it’s not fair.

Just suppose for a moment that 1,000 set themselves a goal to spend more time with their family, eat healthier, spend less money and save more and learn a new skill or pastime just to name a few ideas. And in less than 30 days 800 of these people quit!

Has this ever happened to you? If you have, don’t beat yourself up. You’re not alone. I have been there myself!

Let’s see if any these reasons for falling short ring a bell for you?

“I’m going to be home late again because we’re too busy at the office”

“I can’t eat healthy as eating helps me to lower stress levels”

“If I don’t buy this now, then we’ll miss out on this bargain!

“I didn’t realise it was going to take so much effort to learn a new skill”

Ok, time to be honest with yourself… Are you with the 80% or the 20%?

Do you wonder what makes the 200 people keep going with their dreams and 800 nosedive? Maybe they’ve got something special in their DNA? I hope you laughed when you read that one… As far as I know it’s not your DNA, not your heritage and not the number of college degrees that you have.

Your Why?

Have you got a big personal reason for achieving your #1 goal? Does it excite you? Does it make you feel a little afraid too?  If, so this could become the driving force that can make the difference. Many of the great thought leaders throughout history have said if we have a big enough reason for doing a task, we would be able to stay committed and handle any challenges that come our way. So we are all recommended to find our why and our purpose. If we do this, then this will keep our burning desire within.

Interestingly, the factor that has made the biggest difference for me in recent years has been the team I have in my corner. Having just spent a hole year in tuition with Business Coach Sandi Krakowski, I had an awesome team behind me. The best bit is that as well as working full-time and raising a young family I have managed to build an awesome online business platform. Sure there were tough moments, when I felt that it was all too much for me in the limited time I had available. But, when you hear the voice of your coach whisper “come on, you can do this, just take it step by step” it’s enough to keep you focused and moving forward.

If you were to pop a search into Google, you’d find no shortage of people who gave up on goals because an “expert” said to them “it can’t be done”. So what makes a champion turn the other cheek and say “I can make this happen?”

Did you know that Thomas Edison (yes the light bulb man) told his buddy, Henry Ford to quit wasting his time trying to create the motorcar. He even offered Ford a job instead. For some reason Ford ignored Edison and remained committed and purposefully pursued his dream. We know that Henry Ford took a few attempts to get it wright, but he made it happen.

So who do you have in your corner? Do you have the voice of encouragement or the voice of doubt?

One thing for sure is that, success in most pursuits are easier when you have support and accountability to keep you going. Who do you turn to when the going gets tough? Whether you have a coach, a mentor or just a caring friend who pokes their nose in when you start to flag I would be as bold to say it is essential to have an accountability partner.

If you’ve had problems keeping your resolutions before then it could be time for a slight change in strategy. There are no guarantees that anything will work, but if you keep doing the same thing over and over you’ll definitely get the same result. Are you ready to shine in 2012? Maybe having a support person in your corner is the slight change will make all the difference for you too!
