Stress Free Parenting: Is Self-Discipline The Strategy That We Could All Do With?

Hey parents!


Could your fitness level be impacting your stress levels? Mine too! Maybe all we need is to be fit and healthy so we can serve our children and family as best we can.


Fitness of course can come in many forms; physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial. The common theme for all of these is that it takes hard work and discipline to be fit in one of these areas, let alone all of them.

From experience I'd like to suggest that when you are fit in health, it makes it easier to become fit in other areas.


Currently I'm taking part in a 28 beach body workout program from Men's Health as I prefer the gym stuff. The thing is there are so many options you can enjoy: You can walk, run, play tennis, swim, cycle, do yoga, martial arts, etc; there is something for everyone.


Have you got a favourite type of regular exercise?


Whatever it is for you, as you raise your family for success remember to keep your own fitness regime at the top of the agenda. This will help you to be fit, healthy, relaxed and happier while you go about your day.


What does it take to get fit in any area of life?

At the end of the day it's about having a bit of discipline. Remember this- when you have discipline to look after your physical health, then you'll have discipline to look after your life too!


Think about this- what makes two people start a new exercise routine, one of them quits and the other keeps on going?  The difference is a small matter of self-discipline.


And when we talk about self-discipline as a parent many thoughts come to mind . . . control, protect, love, responsibility, respect, reality…. the list will be different for all of us. The bottom line on self-discipline is that we need to be able to give ourselves a command and then just do it!


Listen up!

We all get setbacks that can take us to a really low place. Sometimes it can be so painful that we feel helpless. This is where your resilience as a parent can really be tested.


Just about 10 years ago my own health was in ruins. My back was shot! The diagnosis was slipped and compressed disc in my lumbar spine and compressed joints in the upper back. PAINFUL. When your whole body is in constant pain from head to toe due to nerve damage it hurts.


The stress and depression was bad enough, but my role as a dad was sorely tested too.

Unable to lift and carry my young kids. Wasn’t able to chase them around the park! Couldn't even carry shopping bags from the supermarket to the car. Felt pretty useless.


Speaking of shopping, here is a list of the experts that tried to fix me: Physio, Osteopath, Chiropractor, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Tai Chi plus tons of medication. There was no magic bullet! The last straw came when a neurologist suggested a risky spinal operation. I ran a mile and kept running.


A little while later researching the internet I came across an article about exercises that help people with back problems. It sounded good to me. It was FREE. It proved to be a back saver without the surgery!

This was the remit:


1. Do 10 exercises to strengthen your core

2. Stretch as far as the pain starts and then stop

3. Do the exercises every morning and night

4. Keep going even if it feels like no improvement is happening.



Self-discipline worked for me and it can work for you too!

Make a decision today to take your fitness up a notch or two. Make self-discipline your friend. The healthier you become physically, the healthier you can become emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially too!
