The constant struggle with finding focus and career direction

career direction

Do you find yourself constantly struggling to find focus and career direction? We’ve all been there. You know, where you can have all the best intention, but you just can’t get it going.

It may be that you need to get a report written, review your finances or simply something like attend some meetings.

What do you do when you don’t feel inspired to follow through? Do you just call it a day and say “I’ll try again tomorrow?” or are you able to get something done.

The easy option is what most people take and they end up doing something which is less hassle instead. Examples of this are ‘veging-out’ in front of the TV, have a beer or glass of wine or even do something fun like going for a walk.

Have you got a go to solution to get yourself inspired?

One of my favourite books by Stephen Pressfield is call the War of Art and in he talks about what makes someone a professional. There is a quote where someone asked the British writer Somerset Maugham whether he writes according to a schedule or only when inspiration strikes. Somerset agreed “I only write when inspiration strikes and luckily it strikes at 9:00 o’clock every morning!”

This is an interesting lesson for us to learn in this reply… we can’t wait for the right moment or the perfect setting before we start working, we have to start right now. The first step in getting inspired is showing up and then getting to work.

Just suppose for a moment that Serena Williams rang up her tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou and said “hey, coach I’m not coming to train today because I’m not feeling inspired!”

What do you think the coach Patrick’s reply would be?

Get to the gym now!

Maybe, just maybe inspiration on shows up when we show up.

We’ve got to create our own sense of urgency and just adopt a do it now attitude. Don’t become a procrastinator by waiting for a looming deadline before getting down to work.

At the end of the day, when it comes to getting inspired, I think Serena sums it up perfectly for us “Everyone’s dream can come true if you just stick to it and work hard.”

Let’s get inspired!

With gratitude.
